About First Congregational Church

  • In the United Church of Christ, we have a saying that “No matter where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.” At First Church, we seek to live that out in each encounter. Join us in worship as we enter into communion together and show all the love of God and the hospitality of Christ.

Ministries

  • Music Ministries

The “pride and joy” of our congregation is our historic 1882 Hilbourne Roosevelt organ. Well-maintained and restored, this beauty in the organ loft brings a smile to every face. Our chancel choir sings each week (generally from September through May) and is always eager to welcome new voices. We welcome and appreciate all who desire to share their gift of music and regularly feature guest musicians and vocalists from within our congregation as well as the wider community. A highlight of the year is the community sing of Handel’s Messiah which we host each November in conjunction with Berkshire Bach.

    Women’s Evening Guild

This group has evolved over the years, but one thing has remained constant: its mission to aid the congregation and wider community through its physical and financial support. Each year WEG hosts a craft fair in August as well as a Holiday Fair in November, inviting crafters and artisans from around the area to sell their wares. The guild runs a popular “luncheon” and bake sale (come early; it sells out!) during these events. Proceeds from these and other fundraisers are used by the guild to financially support special needs of the church and provide funds to a number of area programs that benefit children and families in the community.

    Mission Committee

This committee organizes various collections and other activities throughout the year to respond to needs in the wider community. Each year we provide holiday meals for families in need in the Berkshire Hills School District, buy gifts for families at the Elizabeth Freeman Center as well as both ongoing and periodic support for our local food pantries, veterans programs, seniors and many more.

    Children and Family Ministry

Sunday School is offered each Sunday during the academic school year on Sunday mornings. Children and youth are invited to begin worship with their families, and following a storytime with Rev. Tara, the children are invited to go to our classrooms where we learn about themes such as faithfulness, perseverance, generosity, love and hope through crafts, games, Bible stories and more. At least once a month we host a special afternoon “all ages” activity with Rev. Tara: movies, games, apple picking, field trips, etc. ****Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Rev. Tara is currently offering a weekly Sunday School class via Zoom on Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m. About once a month, a special packet of materials is dropped off at participants homes with all the needed supplies for the crafts/activities. If interested, please contact the church office for log-in information.

    Adult Education

Periodically Rev. Tara leads various study groups on issues of faith and biblical studies. Membership and confirmation classes are also offered upon request/sufficient interest.

    Gardening

Our beautiful grounds and gardens are maintained by a dedicated team of volunteers. Individuals interested in participating can contact the church office to be put in touch with our Gardening Coordinator for an orientation.
