About Oakland Church of the Brethren

  • Oakland is a growing, vital congregation who desires to welcome all people into God’s family. Its roots in the Harris Creek Church of the Brethren, Oakland began as a separate congregation in 1865, growing to a current size of 500 active members.

    Oakland values:

    A deep and active relationship with God;
    A deep and active relationship with one another;
    A commitment to serve the community and world;
    A commitment to welcome all people with the love of Jesus Christ.

    We believe in a loving, faithful God who through Jesus, lived, died, and is risen to offer all people salvation and meaningful life today. We believe the Holy Spirit guides and gives us power to fulfill God’s purposes for us. We believe the Bible is God’s living Word and guide for our lives, and through the church community we work together to continue the work of Jesus in the world.

    At Oakland you will find ministries and opportunities for all ages, meaningful worship, and a safe place to encounter God’s healing love. Please come and be a part of Oakland’s family!

Children and Youth Activities

  • Children’s Programs

    Sunday School and Nursery

    Nursery care is provided for preschool children during Sunday school from 9:15 – 10:15 and during worship service from 10:30 – 11:30. Sunday school classes are offered weekly for potty-trained preschool children through 6th grade.

    “Children’s Church – Godly Play™ Style”

    Godly Play™ invites children to worship and wonder about God in a playful, imaginative way. Based on the Montessori method, Godly Play™ uses a careful telling of scripture stories with engaging story figures. The program uses a variety of creative activities to encourage children to experience the mystery and joy of knowing God. Children, ages three to 5th grade, are welcome to join us following the children’s story given in the sanctuary. Children’s worship time will bring out the curiosity and creativity of each child.

    Where Moms Connect / Preschool Playtime

    Beginning October 2, 2017 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am each Monday morning, parents are encouraged to bring their children to socialize and hear stories from the Bible and enjoy preschool playtime. This is a great way to introduce your children to Jesus and the love He shares. Also, new this year, mom’s can connect and socialize together through bible study and fellowship.

    Kids Club

    Begins: September 13, 2017
    Grades: Kindergarten – 5th Grade
    Time: Wednesday nights, 6:30 to 8:00 pm
    Program Includes: Bible study, crafts, games, and more.
    Youth Programs

    Sunday School

    This is a time for junior and senior high youth to engage in an active learning session, taking topics of interest and relating them to the Bible. They meet every Sunday morning, 9:15 – 10:15 am in the north wing of the church.

    Small Groups

    These groups have become the heart of our ministry. They are designed for youth who want to build a meaningful relationship with an adult mentor while seeking answers to their questions about God. These goals are accomplished through Bible study and prayer. They meet weekly during the months of September through May.

    Sunday Night Live

    We are excited to offer youth group EVERY Sunday night for those in 6th – 12th grade. Each night will include fun games, a group lesson and a message. After the introductory activity, the youth will separate into junior & senior high groups for discussion and small group time. This is where the youth are taught, challenged, and encouraged to dig deeper in their relationship with God. This nonjudgmental and accepting group of people will guide your preteens and teenagers as they not only figure themselves out, but identify who they are in Christ as well. Each youth will be assigned a mentor who will guide, encourage, support, and build a relationship specifically with your child. This is the year of “Roots” where they will be building, guiding, and strengthening their roots here at Oakland.

    Fall and Spring Retreats

    Youth have the opportunities to attend spiritual retreats in the fall and spring.

    Summer Trips

    Every summer a special event is offered to senior high youth. In a four-year period, they have the opportunity to participate in two work camps, the National Youth Conference in Colorado, and a Brethren heritage tour through Pennsylvania. These trips are fun and meaningful and often have a big impact on their life.

    Summer Work Camps

    Our denomination offers many service projects for the youth throughout the USA and Central America each summer.
