About Burns United Methodist Church

Burns United Methodist Church is the OLDEST African American church in the state of Iowa.

It was founded in 1866 by a few black men and women who wanted to worship God in Des Moines, Iowa. From the Twenty-Third Annual Conference of the Iowa Methodist Episcopal Church it was duly organized.

The name “BURNS” is in honor of Francis Burns, the first black Bishop of Episcopal Methodism.

In 1928, Burns Methodist Episcopal worshiped at its first permanent building located at 811 Crocker Street. We continued to worship there until April 2011 when God blessed us to move to our current location at 1909 Martin Luther King Jr, Pkwy in the Mondamin neighborhood.

We look forward to seeing what God is going to do to us, with us and through us in this community! Everyone is WELCOME to experience God’s presence in our worship! COME AS YOU ARE!
